Thinking about moving to from Portland, Oregon to Clark County, Washington on the other side of the river? We’re giving you the complete guide on what you need to know to make that move happen. Watch the video below or read the blog to find out more.
First Things First
If you live in the Portland/Multnomah County area right now or are thinking about relocating to the Vancouver area, the first big thing I need you to know is that these areas can be VERY culturally different.
Portland is generally associated with more of an upbeat, face paced lifestyle. Of course anyone can (and does) live in Portland, but it is a choice spot for single and young people. Portland has more of a “city” vibe than Vancouver, WA.
On the other hand, Vancouver (and Clark County in general) is more of a suburban, family-oriented area (though of course, anyone can live here). Life is generally a little slower-paced, and less centered around typical city activities.
Naturally, these disparities create a difference in culture.
Are We Biased?
You may say we’re biased because we only live and work in Washington, but for good reason. Portland area has seen a rise in crime, murders, homelessness, and just a general sense of unrest and lack of community.
Reasons Why People Are Moving
Why are people moving away from Portland? These are some reasons that we hear every week from our clients at Dubyne Realty Group.
- Homelessness
- Riots
- Graffiti, lack of cleanliness
- Lack of leadership
- Unfriendly area to families
Things to Know & Benefits of Moving to Clark County, WA
These are some things you’ll want to know about making the move, and some of the great benefits!
Drop The State Income Tax
You can drop the state income tax if you work from home or work in Washington state. Remember, if you physically work in Oregon, you will still have to pay state income tax.
Many of our clients get 7-10% raises when they make this move!
More Family Friendly & Suburban
Vancouver is more of a families/suburban area than Portland (though of course, anyone can and does live here)! Over the last few years especially, many people have felt that Portland is become to dangerous. Statistics show that across the board, crime in the Portland area has increased dramatically.
Even though we are generally more suburban, there’s still a great lively downtown scene on the westside in Downtown Vancouver and on the Vancouver Waterfront.
Ask us about the beautiful, new full-service condo building on the waterfront, Kirkland Tower!
We’re a Driving Oriented City
Most of Vancouver and Clark County is more spread out than the dense city of Portland. That means that it’s best to drive. We do have public transportation with the bus system, but it’s not very widely used.
If you want to live somewhere where everything is walking distance, the best spot for that is Downtown/Uptown Vancouver and the Vancouver Waterfront.
There’s a Spot For Everyone
We really find this to be true! No matter your living situation, hobbies, job, politics, or interests, there is a spot for everyone in Clark County.

Money Goes a Little Further
Our housing market, and living costs in general, are typically less on this side of the river, as opposed to Portland area. Speaking on housing costs specifically, this gap between prices used to be wider 5-10 years ago, but has since shrunk, especially post-COVID.
